The MFB was called to the Mobil Refinery in Millers Rd Altona just before midnight for a leak of unleaded petrol from a large storage tank.

DATE: February 8, 2010
TIME: 23:47 hours
CALL No: 2269
ADDRESS: Mobil Refinery – Millers Road Altona.

DETAILS: The MFB was called to the Mobil Refinery in Millers Rd Altona just before midnight for a leak of unleaded petrol from a large storage tank. The tank was only 40% full but still contained 3.5 million litres of the volatile fuel. Fire crews poured foam over the spilled petrol to reduce the chance of ignition whilst Mobil personnel rushed to transfer the contents into another storage tank. It was initially thought that it would take more than 12 hours to drain the huge tank but this was later revised to 9 hours. The spilled fuel has been contained within a “bund” which is a walled off area that prevents any of the petrol from entering drainage systems or polluting waterways.

An estimated 20,000 litres of fuel has spilled. No environmental or air quality concerns are reported but the situation will be continually monitored.

As the area surrounding the tank is covered in foam, it is difficult to ascertain the exact cause of the link.

The incident is ongoing and it could be late afternoon (9 Feb) before the tanks are ffully emptied. MFB crews will be remaining on scene.
