An elderly couple has been treated for minor burns after a fire in their Clifton Hill home this morning.

Firefighters were called to the Grant Street property at 8.14am.

It's believed the fire started in a waste paper bin and was fuelled by old records and a wooden piano.

The fire was reported to MFB after black smoke was seen issuing from the fly wire door.

Ambulance paramedics responded to assist with treatement to the couple in their eighties and transported them to hospital.

A thermal imaging camera was used to check if the fire had spread through the roof, however the fire was contained to the room of origin.
