A Carlton church has been severely damaged by fire.

Firefighters were called to St Jude's Anglican Church on the corner of Lygon and Palmerson streets in Carlton at 4.07am on Saturday 18 October.

The fire involved the basement and roof the church.  The building measures 20 by 50 metres and had flames issuing from several windows as well as the roof upon arrival.

Firefighters used appliance mounted monitors to perform an external attack while other crews entered through the chapel and fought the blaze using hose lines.

The combined attack managed to contain the blaze to the western [Palmerston Street] end and also saved an adjoining residency building.

The fire was brought under control at 4.53am, within 46 minutes, and the damage bill has been estimated at $500,000.

The cause of the fire has been deemed suspicious and is being investigated by Victoria Police.
