Prahran home destroyed following lightning strike

27 Oct 2014
Firefighters believe a lightning strike has sparked a fire destroying a Prahran home.

Crews were called to the propert in A'Beckett Street about 2am.

A tree fire, presumably started by a lightning strike, spread to a nearby dwelling and set alight an attic room in the roof.  The top floor was well alight upon arrival with flames threatening nearby houses.  Additional crews were responded to the street behind to protect the house at the rear.

The fire took just under two hours to bring under control and firefighters undertook special procedures due to the presence of asbestos.

Residents from several homes were evacuated with all allowed to return by 4:30am except those from numbers 10 and 9 A’Beckett St who are being looked after by local friends.

Damage to the house at No 10 was severe with most of the dwelling destroyed.  The damage bill has been estimated at $850,000.
