back to list
12 May 2011
An Education Security Representative arrived on scene at Wheelers Hill Primary School and reported the obviously large fire to the MFB. First MFB appliances were on scene within minutes and called for additional assistance.

Date: May 12, 2011
Time: 05:16 hours
Call Number: 4001

Address: Wheelers Hill Primary School

The fire within the centre of the single storey brick constructed school was well alight.  The large wing of approx. 100m x 30m appeared well involved and full of smoke.  MFB and assisting CFA firefighters, worked under difficult circumstances to bring the fire under control in just over 1 hour.  Commander Dean has praised the efforts of the firefighters in stopping the extension of fire which had potential of destroying the entire wing.  Extensive damage has been caused to the General Office, Staff Lounge/Kitchen area and two classrooms (15 x 30m).  The remainder of the wing has been smoke filled/damaged.

The MFB will remain on scene throughout the morning to continue necessary fire duties.  There is still smoke lingering over the Wheelers Hill area from the fire.

The cause of this large fire has been deemed “suspicious” and police are on scene.

Attending Appliances:

Pumpers: 12 including CFA support

Number of firefighters: 50

Officer in charge: Commander Rob Dean
