A build-up of grease in the flue has been identified as the cause of a kitchen fire which spread to the roof of a restaurant in Oakleigh just before 11am this morning.

Firefighters arrived at the scene within five minutes of receiving the first of a number of Triple Zero (000) calls.

They were met with flames and smoke issuing from the roof of the two storey brick building in Eaton Mall.

Attending firefighters wore Breathing Apparatus and made their way inside in a bid to control the fire which had quickly engulfed the kitchen and was threatening to spread to the neighbouring building.

Their hard work ensured the fire did not spread next door and was brought under control less than half an hour after the initial crews arrived at the scene.

The restaurant had just opened trading for the day which meant no customers were inside at the time, and thankfully, two staff members safely evacuated without injury.

Almost 30 firefighters were at the scene with the support of Victoria Police for traffic management.

Tips for staying fire safe in the kitchen:

  • Keep stove top, griller, oven, range hood and cooking area free from built up grease, dust and oil.
  • Never leave cooking unattended.
  • Keep combustibles such as tea towels and paper towels away from cooking and heat sources.
  • Ensure kitchen appliances are clean and in good working order.Always supervise children in the kitchen. Keep them away from the stove top and oven. Keep pot handles turned in.
