Sandringham apartment fire forces evacuation of residents

A fire in a Sandringham apartment block forced the evacuation 100 residents on Friday night.

Firefighters were called to the fourth story Bay Road complex about 10.30pm on 17 July.

On arrival thick smoke and flames were issuing from a third-floor balcony. Quick action from firefighters on scene brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes. 

The fire was confined to the kitchen and balcony area of the apartment.

Approximately 100 people were evacuated from the building and were allowed back in until the smoke was removed using fans.

The cause is yet to be identified.
