A smoke alarm is being credited with waking and alerting two sleeping occupants to a fire in their house in Box Avenue Forest Hill.

Date: February 6, 2012
Time: 22:49 hours
Call Number: 2388

Address: Box Avenue, Forest Hill.

Both were able to escape safely and were uninjured.

The fire spread rapidly to engulf most of the single storey house in just a few minutes and two neighbouring properties also came under threat.

MFB firefighters not only worked quickly to contain the blaze but also had to contend with the presence of asbestos in the building materials.

The blaze was brought under control in 30 minutes with few rooms being spared considerable damage.

The repair bill has been estimated at more than $100,000 and the cause is under investigation.
