A working smoke alarm saved a Taylors Lakes family from a house fire overnight.

Firefighters were called to the Queen Vic Crescent home just after midnight.

Two family members were alerted to a fire in their home this morning by the operation of a working smoke alarm. They safely self-evacuated.

The brick veneer, 50 square, two-storey home, has sustained extensive damage to the roof extending into the walls. The council Building Surveyor will be attending tomorrow.

The fire took 45 minutes to bring under control.

MFB firefighters remained on scene throughout the morning to continue to extinguish and maintain fire duties.

Police are investigating.
