Smoke alarms provide vital warning in Caulfield South

08 Apr 2017
The occupants of a Caulfield South home have had a lucky escape from fire thanks to a working smoke alarm.

MFB received several Triple Zero (000) calls by passers by alerting them to a roof on fire in Hawthorn Road about 10.20pm last night.
Around 20 firefighters mounted an aggressive attack on the fire and managed to quickly contain it to the front roof space.
They were relieved to find that a working smoke alarm had provided the homes occupants with the early warning they needed to evacuate safely.
Specialist Fire Investigators will return to the scene this morning to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Under Victorian law every home MUST have at least one working smoke alarm on each level

Remember, only working smoke alarms save lives so ensure you clean and test yours regularly and replace the battery when required.

All smoke alarms have a shelf life and must be replaced every ten years. If you think yours may be more than 10 years old, replace it.

MFB recommend photoelectric smoke alarms with long life lithium batteries in a tamper proof case.
