Smoke billows from St Kilda apartment fire

Beach goers were shocked when they saw smoke billowing from a St Kilda apartment on Saturday afternoon.

The fire occurred in a top floor flat of an eleven storey apartment building.

Crews received the call at 3.44pm to the Marine Parade Edgewater Towers complex.

The installed sprinkler system activated and kept the fire suppressed and minimised fire damage.

The fire was contained to 1 room and quickly brought under control.  The top floor was smoke logged and approximately  40 people evacuated safely from the building.

No one was home at the time of the fire.

Total damage is estimated at about  $10 000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.  There were no reports of injuries.
