Diners evacuated a popular restaurant on Toorak Road after a fire broke out in the kitchen overnight.

Firefighters were called to Cosi Bar Ristorante just before 7pm due to a fire in a first floor kitchen.

About 10 diners and staff safely evacuated. Damage was contained to the Kitchen and the immediate part of the building.

The building is believed to be still structurally sound.  Damage due to heat and smoke is estimated to be approximately $100,000.

The fire was deemed under control within 20 minutes of arrival. There were no reports of any injuries.

The cause is believed to be due to faulty equipment in the kitchen.
