Suspicious circumstances surround office blaze

Thirty firefighters battled the fire in a two storey office building in Centre Road Bentleigh on Monday morning.

The fire was reported shortly before 6am with MFB crews arriving at the scene in less than 6 minutes.

Thick, acrid smoke was billowing from the top floor as firefighters wearing breathing apparatus struggled to gain access pass security doors.  Once inside, crews found several seats of fire and split into teams to fight the individual blazes.

The office block housed a number of businesses including a solicitor’s office and an accountant.  The fire took more than an hour to contain with an additional aerial appliance (similar to a large cherry picker) called in to direct water sprays from above.

Damage to the top floor was extensive with repairs estimated at more than $100,000.  Losses to the individual businesses may be harder to quantify due the large amount of paperwork and computer files that may have been lost.

Police have been advised and will continue the investigation into the cause of the blaze.
