Smoke from a building fire blanketed the inner northern suburbs yesterday.

Crews were called to the fire on Nicholson St near Reid St, Fitzroy North, just before 5.30pm.

The blaze involved a two storey warehouse and office building measuring 20m x 60m.

The premises , previously used by Il Globo newspaper,  was unoccupied and due to be demolished to make way for a large apartment block redevelopment.

In preparation of the demolition, files and archives had been boxed up and some of the timber flooring had been pulled up and stacked ready for removal.

The fire produced a large pall of smoke that was kept low due to the prevailing atmospheric conditions and blanketed residential areas to the northeast.  A warning was issued warning residents in the affected suburbs to keep their windows and doors closed to keep out the smoke.  The warning was later removed when the smoke danger had cleared.

The building suffered extensive structural damage with a two-storey wall adjoining a laneway to the south buckling and in danger of collapse.

A second wall on the north side was also compromised.  The roof consisted of asbestos material covered in steel cladding and special asbestos procedures were enacted for the safety of the attending crews.

The fire took just over 90 minutes to bring under control and its cause was deemed suspicious.  No damage or repair cost was attributed to the blaze as the building was cited for demolition.
