Suspicious house fire in North Melbourne

24 Sep 2018
Firefighters have managed to stop the spread of a house fire on Alfred Street in North Melbourne this afternoon.

Numerous Triple Zero (000) calls were received from concerned members of the public just before 5:30pm, which saw MFB dispatch additional resources to fight the fire.

Initial crews were met with a single storey house which was fully alight, flames threatening to spread to the neighbouring home.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus quickly conducted a search and thankfully confirmed no one was inside the abandoned building at the time. They also checked the home next door which was cleared.

Approximately 24 firefighters fought hard for 40 minutes before bringing the blaze under control. Their quick work ensured the fire did not spread to the adjoining property.

MFB has determined the fire was suspicious, and once the scene has been made safe it will be handed over to Victoria Police for further investigation.

Victoria Police and Ambulance Victoria paramedics provided assistance to MFB at the scene.

Members of the public with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1300 333 000 or head to: https://www.crimestoppersvic.com.au/report-a-crime/
