Thomastown residents evacuated after hazmat scare

Residents have been evacuted following a hazmat incident in Thomastown.

Firefighters were called to a home on Lockwood Grove at 9.42am after a number of bags of an unknown chemical found in the backyard of a property.

The Council are aware that the bags were dumped illegally yesterday and council were unable to find any identification markings on the bags. At least two bags were split.

MFB Specialist Hazmat crews have responded along with the Scientific Officer and are attempting to first, identify the contents and then once known work out how to best remove the bags.

A number of surrounding properties have been evacuated by Victoria Police.

MFB Crews will be on scene for at least an hour
