A double storey weather board house in Malvern East was extensively damaged by fire last night.

MFB fire crews arrived at the Fountaine Ave home about 10.30pm to find the building well alight.

The adjoining houses were threatened by the flames and were successfully protected.  The fire was prevented from spreading any further.  The fire was declared under control at 11:18 pm.

There were three people in the house at the time.  They smelled the smoke and evacuated safely.  It is not known if there was a working smoke alarm present.

Damage is estimated to be approximately $750,000.

The cause of the fire will investigated by the MFB Fire Investigation Unit in daylight hours.

There were no reports of any injuries.
