"Towelling inferno" at Richmond Football Clubrooms

back to list
13 Aug 2015
Firefighters have prevented any major damage at the Punt Road clubrooms following a towel fire early this morning.

Crews were called to the the Richmond Football Clubrooms about 6.14am after a pile of towels near the swimming pool caught alight.

The pool and reception area were evacuated as smoke began to fill the building.

The fire was quickly extinguished and special fans used to extract the smoke from the premises.

The cause of the fire is uncertain but it is possible a chemical reaction had occurred after one or more towels had been used to mop up some spilled pool chemical before being placed in the pile to be washed.

Apart from the smoke and chemical smell, there was no damage to the facility.
