A large section of the roof of a single storey, brick veneer home has collapsed during an aggressive fire this afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Closter Ave home in Nunawading just before 12.30pm.

Nearby workmen noticed the evaporative cooling system and roof on fire.  They alerted the sole occupant in the home, who was unaware of the fire.  This occupant evacuated safely.

The workman then attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose whilst fire crews responded.

On scene within five minutes MFB firefighters found the entire roof on fire and collapsing into the living areas of the home.  An external attack on the fire was only possible and it was under control in 40 minutes.

The majority of contents have been destroyed.

The local council Building Surveyor will be attending to check the structural integrity of the home.

MFB specialist Fire Investigators will also be attending to determine the cause of the fire.  MFB firefighters will remain on scene for several more hours conducting fire duties.
