09 Apr 2010
In the UK, two firefighters tragically died battling a high-rise fire on Tuesday in the southern English city of Southampton.

According to Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service the fire started on the seventh floor of an apartment block and from the pictures posted on the website the block looks remarkably similar to the structures we would experience all over the inner Melbourne area.

MFB CEO Graham Fountain has written to the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service expressing heartfelt condolences on the loss of two of their members.

There will, of course, be an investigation and we will all try to learn something from its findings.

In the meantime it is appropriate for MFB and its staff to reflect on this tragedy, to ensure a continued focus on risk assessment and maintain a ‘safety first’ work environment in what is an inherently dangerous job.
