Firefighters have rescued a man trapped in a muddy trench in Essendon this afternoon.

Crews were called to a work site in Lincoln Road about 2.30pm and arrived to find the man trapped in mud eight metres down.

Quick-thinking firefighters stabilised the patient and put a breathing apparatus mask on him while the rescue operation was mounted.
