Firefighters have rescued three people from a fire which ripped through a disused building in South Melbourne this morning.

Crews were called to the scene in Park St about 11am and arrived to find smoke billowing out of the three storey building.

Firefighters promptly entered the premises to search for occupants and mount an internal attack on the fire.

They found three people inside and managed to bring them out safely.

The trio is being treated by Ambulance Victoria paramedics.

The blaze was declared under control just after 11.30am but firefighters are expected to remain on scene for some time.
