Motorists warned to avoid area after truck brings down tram cable.

MFB rescue crews were called to the incident on Lygon Street at 9.15am.

On arrival they discovered a truck had brought down overhead tram wires along a 500 metre section of Lygon St Carlton, between Princes Street and Elgin Street, causing the closure of Lygon Street to all traffic along this section.

The intersection of Lygon St, Princes St and Cemetery Rd East is also closed to traffic.

Tramways workers estimate it will take up to eight hours to reinstate the overhead wiring.

Traffic in the area is already chaotic and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
