Twenty people were evacuated following a fire in an East Melbourne apartment block last night.

MFB firefighters were alerted to the blaze following numerous calls to Triple Zero (000) just after 11.30am.
Callers reported seeing flames lapping the building and residents evacuating.
Crews in breathing apparatus entered the burning building and helped evacuate eight people who were still inside.
Firefighters managed to contain the blaze to a single unit on the ground floor of the complex.
