MFB crews remain on scene in Footscray following a large blaze at a shopping centre this morning.

The incident was declared under control about 12.30pm, however the fire has yet to be extinguished.

An excavator has been put to work to partially demolish the Nicholson Street building to allow firefighters access to attack the fire internally.

Crews are expected to remain in the area for some time.

Donald Road has been re-opened, however, a number of other road closures remain in place, including Ryan, Nicholson and Leeds streets.

More than 70 firefighters were deployed to the incident, which unfolded about 6am.

It’s believed the fire began above a cool room at the premises, however MFB Fire Investigators will investigate the cause.
