Watsonia cafe damaged in overnight blaze

The kitchen of a a Watsonia cafe has been damaged overnight by fire.

Several calls were received about 10.24pm for a fire at the double storey building on Watsonia Road.

When MFB firefighters arrived on scene the first crew requested further assistance due to the heavy smoke logging of the building. 

Crews in Breathing Apparatus commenced a search of the building trying to locate the seat of the fire and ensuring that all occupants had evacuated.

As well as the café the building contains a residence at the rear of the building with another residence on the upper level.


The fire was contained to the kitchen area of the café with the rest of the building suffering significant smoke damage, the shops either side also suffered some smoke damage.

The fire was declared under control after 31 minutes and at this stage the cause is undetermined with the Fire Investigation Unit to attend this morning with the council Health Inspector.
