MFB firefighters have battled a grassfire in Doncaster overnight

MFB crews were called to the scrub fire on Hampshire Road near the Eastern Freeway just before 7:30pm.

The fire was caused after strong winds brought a tree down on powerlines, which sparked the blaze.

The fire quickly spread into surrounding scrub and bush of the reserve along a bike track.

The fire jumped Wetherby Road and crews reported spotting of embers for a kilometre in front of the fire.

Eight fire truck attended the incident with about 30 firefighters.

It took crews one hour and twenty minutes to contain the blaze and 2.5 hours to extinguish it completely.

There are homes in the area and a smoke warning was issued, however no homes were evacuated.

On the first day of summer MFB would like to remind everyone to prepare for their local fire risk, as grass fires don't just happen in the bush. Visit bit.ly/mfbfirerisk to learn more about your local area.
