A woman has had a lucky escape after her car crashed into a building site in Burwood East this afternoon.

The car ploughed through the intersection of Middleborough Road and Burwood Highway and through temporary fencing, landing on construction scaffolding.

Firefighters were called to the scene about 1.20pm and arrived to find the car poised precariously in the middle of the building site.

The female driver, believed to be aged in her 40s, managed to exit the car safely.

She is being assessed at the scene by paramedics but appears to have escaped injury.

Luckily, construction workers had the day off.

Victoria Police and WorkSafe are also on the scene.

The car will be removed from the building site by crane.
