05 Nov 2014
A single-storey weatherboard house in Yarraville was virtually destroyed on Monday night after deliberately being set alight.

The blaze in Powell Street was reported shortly before midnight on 3 November with the house fully involved in fire by the time fire crews arrived just a few minutes later.

A neighbouring property came under immediate threat and was only saved by the quick work performed by the first firefighters to arrive at the scene.

As soon as it was safe to do so, a search was conducted to check if anyone had been trapped inside.  Fortunately, no-one was home at the time of the fire.

The blaze took 20 minutes to bring under control with Police notified for suspicious circumstances.   The house was later declared a crime scene.

The damage bill has been estimated at $200,000.
