22 Aug 2013
One workman is deceased and another injured following a building collapse this morning.

Two electricians working in another section of the site quickly evacuated and were uninjured.

Fire crews received the call to the Hawthorn Road work site just before 10am.

The three-storey building was under construction at the time. It is planned to have a business on the lower level and two levels of units above.

First MFB firefighters, with police on scene, pulled the injured person out from beneath construction material, to waiting paramedics.

Below further levels of flooring sheets, sadly, a young workman was found without a pulse.

Soon after, additional MFB firefighters, including specialist Urban Search and Rescue Operators and equipment arrived on scene. They then secured and stabilised the structure to stop any further collapse and ensure the area made safe for all involved in the continuing incident.

The incident will be investigated by Work Safe personnel and police.

Ten MFB appliances and 28 firefighters attended the scene.
